Big City Burgers & Greens: Both a Restaurant and a Venue

Our city is buzzing with new food concepts these days, which should excite even the most conventional of restaurant-goers because you don’t have to be stuffy, quirky, or wealthy to enjoy the down-to-earth foodie world of Des Moines.  Big City Burgers and Greens is a great little spot whose food and atmosphere liven up the below-the-sky-walk luncheon landscape of downtown.  The restaurant, owned by Pam and Harry Bookey, was inspired by their travels and their desire to bring “health, social responsibility, and fun” to the food scene in their local city.  In partnership with Dos Rios and CateringDSM, Big City Burgers and Greens is operated and managed by an all-star team who really know good food, which is why we’re so happy to have them on the Urban Card.

What’s Unique:

Big City Burgers is one of Iowa’s first 100% compostable restaurants, and they serve organic, antibiotic and hormone free beef and free-range poultry.  They commit to purchasing local whenever possible.

Best Seat in the House:

On the patio watching the DSM Urbanites luncheon.

You can now enjoy a burger and this great space on Saturdays after your breakfast burrito at the Farmer’s Market!

What to Order:

According to Allison, Big City Burgers and Greens marketing guru, one of the hottest selling items on the menu is the Turkey Burger, but the Big City Burger with the Big City Fries (thin cut fries tossed with asiago cheese, white truffle oil and Italian parsley) are a first-timer must-have.

What You Should Know:

Recently, Jim Duncan (Food Dude of City View) described Big City “the Burger Napster” for the restaurant catering to a  new generation of consumers who drive the market from “push” (you buy what’s off the menu) to “pull” (you create the menu) models.  I love that!  Although, this type of model can leave most of us a little intimidated to try something new and perhaps overwhelmed by the possibilities.  My first visit and opportunity to make my own food creation at Big City was a case-in-point.  Ah, the options!  Will I put avocado on a burger or salad?  Burger.  Salad.  Burger.  Salad.  Burger it is.  If you’re like I am (not a master of on-the-fly decisions), try ordering online so you get familiar with the menu and you don’t cause a lunchtime traffic jam.

We also think it’s cool that their space is available for evening and weekend rentals to be transformed into the event of your design.  Overall a really great place, great people behind it, and a great conscious concept we hope you love as much as we do!

Perfect for cocktail parties and rehearsal dinners!
