Eat Mor Chickin

Recognizing a company by only its slogan, logo, or mascot is sign of celebrity of another level. Madonna. Beyoncé. Adele. Bono. First name only megastars that exist somewhere…out there. Far away from local and not unlike how some feel about franchises – recognizable, cool and polished but often distant, unfriendly, and generally lacking in substance.

I am an omnivorous consumer. I spend my money based on if the brand actually impacted my life in a tangible, lasting, and positive way. I am a passionate local but companies of all kinds earn my business with simple things that shape a good experience like values, customer service, quality products, and conscious practices. While I must admit I’m not a fast food person, a recent conversation with Chik-Fil-A has changed some of my megastar perceptions. I am delighted to present this interview so you can see for yourself why we feel our newest Urban Card® Merchant deserves our snaps.

Q: What inspires you and how does that inspiration affect your company?

A:  My team inspires me. I have many great people who have chosen to work with me and who bring my vision to life. I am often asked how big my family is and I say 28 on average. The looks I get are priceless. I have 5 children, my wife, Jana, and 22 staff that are like family to me. We laugh and we cry together. We do life together. If I do not love on my staff, how can I expect them to love on our guests?

Q: How do you believe your passion and vision translate into a unique experience for your customers?

A: I know that Exceptional Food served by Exceptional People giving Exceptional Service will translate into an Exceptional Experience for our guests. This is what drives me every day.

Q: What’s your favorite item at your establishment and why?

A: For over 21 years I have eaten the Chick-fil-A sandwichOur founder developed the boneless breast of chicken sandwich. There wasn’t one before it. He likes to say “We didn’t invent the chicken, but we did invent the chicken sandwich.” It has a crave-able taste. If I am gone for a week, I cannot wait to come home to my favorite sandwich.

Q: You have a very loyal following who say Chick-Fil-A is a high quality brand. Insights into this?

A: For the past 40 years we have been known for our high quality food – we have fresh squeezed lemonade and we squeeze lemons daily to ensure we have a quality product. We bring in seasoned chicken breast, but we do all the hand breading ourselves in each Chick-Fil-A restaurant. The customer is therefore receiving quality food whether it is our Chick-fil-A sandwich, our nuggets, our chick-n-strips, or the spicy sandwich. Our food is also nutritious because we use boneless breast of chicken for all of our products. We bring in fresh produce – not pre-cut or chopped because it isn’t as fresh.

Recently we launched our Recipe for Service initiative. We want to be known for the next 40 years for our service. Customers experience an attentive and courteous staff. In the mall food court we send people out to refresh our guests’ beverage or to clear their table for them. We carry trays for moms with strollers. These are experiences you do not typically see in a food court. Our Raving Fans trust Chick-fil-A.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your business?

A: We will be opening a new free standing restaurant in West Des Moines this summer and I will have the privilege of leading it. I look forward to being able to impact people’s lives whether it is through our food, our service, or by creating an emotional connection with our cow (our mascot).

The cow, of course, needs no clarification. We know it. And, n0w we know Garry, an Exceptional Person serving Exceptional Food giving Exceptional Service and offers an Exceptional Experience for his Urban Card© guests. This is what drives us every day.
